Your First Outdoor Strength Class in Battersea Park: What to Expect
Thinking about joining a strength class, but feeling unsure about your first session?
Perhaps you have never lifted weights before. Perhaps you used to train regularly, but work, family or a long break have knocked you out of the habit. Or perhaps you simply prefer the idea of exercising in Battersea Park to spending another hour indoors.
The unfamiliar part can be the biggest hurdle: what to bring, whether you will keep up, and what happens when you do not know an exercise.
Here is what you need to know before joining us.
You do not need to be experienced with weights
You do not have to learn every exercise before booking your first class. That is what coaching is for.
At Battersea Park Fitness, our outdoor Strength classes welcome beginners and experienced lifters. Exercises can be adapted to your level, so joining a group does not mean everyone has to use the same weight or work at exactly the same pace.
If you are new, tell your coach. If you are returning after time away, say so. Having that conversation gives your coach a useful starting point and means you can ask questions from the outset.
Your first session is an opportunity to get familiar with the movements and the coaching. There is no need to arrive with something to prove.
What does a class involve?
Our Strength classes in Battersea Park last 55 minutes, with a maximum of six people.
Sessions include work with barbells, dumbbells, bodyweight exercises and conditioning. You receive guidance on technique throughout, with exercises adjusted to suit your experience.
The small group format leaves room for individual attention. You can ask how a movement should feel, check your position or discuss a different option if something does not feel right.
For your first visit, focus on understanding the instructions and becoming comfortable with the exercises. How much somebody else is lifting is much less useful than learning what works for you.
What should you bring?
We supply the training equipment, including weights, resistance bands and mats. You only need to bring water and appropriate clothing.
For an outdoor session, a little preparation makes arriving easier:
Wear comfortable exercise clothing that lets you move freely.
Choose trainers with suitable grip for outdoor surfaces.
Check the forecast and bring a layer you can remove as you warm up.
Leave enough time to find the meeting point without rushing.
Check the location details provided with your booking before setting off. If you are unsure where to go, contact us beforehand so you can arrive feeling prepared.
You do not need specialist weightlifting kit to try your first class.
Tell your coach what you need
A useful introduction can be as simple as: “I’m new to this,” or “I haven’t trained for a while.”
Let your coach know about any injury, limitation or movement you are concerned about before you begin. Ask questions whenever instructions are unclear, and speak up if an exercise causes pain.
You are not interrupting the session by asking for help. Clear communication is part of being coached.
It is also worth sharing what brought you along. You might want more confidence with weights, a regular activity outside the house, or a structured session that fits around work. Knowing your starting point helps make the conversation more useful.
Make the first visit manageable
You do not need to plan an entire fitness transformation before attending one class.
Choose a session you can realistically get to, put it in your diary and prepare your clothes the evening before. Removing those small practical obstacles can make the first visit feel less daunting.
Afterwards, think about the experience. Did the coaching make sense? Were you comfortable asking questions? Could this fit into your normal week?
Those are useful things to consider when deciding whether to return. A routine needs to work alongside your life if you are going to keep making time for it.
